There are endless possibilities in the way an artist can apply paint to canvas...

Nature has given me a lifetime of beautiful subjects to paint.  Whether hiking into the foothills of Colorado or sitting along the rocky shores of the New England coast, I have enjoyed my painting adventures.  When venturing outdoors, I always carry my paints, brushes, canvas and camera just in case there's something amazing that might take place such as a few minutes of an expanding rainbow, the drama of a wave crashing onto the rocks or the landing of a butterfly pumping it's wings before flight.

All photography by Marie Louise Stile.

From Plein Air to Studio

Capturing the moment

Part of what makes painting outdoors so fun is when I find just the right location with just the right tools in order to set up for a relaxing painting session.  On this particular day, I was able to find a low enough rock at the water's edge in order to be eye level with a small cascading waterfalls.  It was only in a matter of a week that the water level had dropped down to what would have given me a whole different landscape.

In the studio

By working outdoors, I am able to bring my painting studies, photographs and sketches back into the studio room in order to combine with my larger scale canvas.

The Beauty of Mother Nature

observing

I was inspired to become an artist at an early age of about 4 while watching my mother work on an oil painting.  I could sense a peaceful joy in her while she was mixing the oil colors on her pallet and then touching the loaded brush onto canvas.

As a teenager, I loved to daydream while riding my bicycle through the beautiful landscape of farm fields, ocean front and past romantically designed victorian homes.

journaling

During my teen years, my family resided in a small seaside town on the New Jersey shore.  It was here that I began carrying a sketch book wherever I went in order to write poetry and paint.  In the cold winter months, I would find a warm shelter along the jetty rocks while watching the ocean waves.   Outside of town there were vast salt marshes which were continually illuminated by the moisture of salty air, creating a softness of color that swept over the landscape.

5th annual olana plein air celebration 2016

I was selected to participate in the 5th Annual Olana Plein Air Celebration at Olana, Hudson, NY.  It was a wonderful three day celebration with a number of talented local and regional artists.  The Olana Partnership did a wonderful job in hosting this event!

Each summer in August from 1998 until 2016, I have been participating the Newport Art Museum's Wet Paint Benefit Event.  I hope to be out there painting by the ocean this coming August 2017!
